What I've been doing while not blogging...

Exponential_08_2I have been going literally non-stop for the last four days!  Mostly I have been in Orlando for the Exponential Conference where I've done some speaking and serving as conference President.  I've been going so hard I didn't have enough time to stop and celebrate some absolutely amazing stuff going on at Community and some amazing stuff going on here in Orlando!  So, I am going to play a little catch up in the next several hours.  Check back -- great stuff coming your way!!

    Did You Feel It?

Earthquake_2 Did you feel it last night?

I woke up in the middle of the night  last night (which I never do) and could hear the little television in our bedroom shaking.  Sue whispers to me, "is it raining?"  It turns out we had a 5.4 earthquake centered down in West Salem, Illinois and felt throughout the Midwest.  Just heard it was the perhaps the strongest earthquake ever centered in the Midwest

    So,did you feel it?

    Back from Cyber Purgatory

HellThe way I understand purgatory: "a condition or place of temporary punishment, suffering, expiation, or the like."

If that definition is correct, then I just returned from cyber purgatory!  For the last few days my feedburner hasn't been working and they claimed that I copied something out of a word document and that caused all the problems.  OK, so they turned out to be right...but that is not the point!  It was still torture trying to figure out which of hundreds of posts was the problem.  And after spending all my blogging time correcting a few posts and deleting some others I'm back in action.

A Victim Treats His Mugger Right

DiazMy brother-in-law works for an NPR radio station and sent me the link to this remarkable story, A Victim Treats His Mugger Right.  The best way to enjoy this story is to go to NPR and click on "listen now" so you can hear Julio Diaz for yourself.  Or you can just read it below:

This is Julio Diaz, a 31-year-old social worker who ended his hour-long subway commute to the Bronx one stop early, just so he can eat at his favorite diner.  But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn.  He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife. He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, 'Here you go,'" Diaz says.  As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm."  The would-be robber looked at his would-be victim, "like what's going on here?" Diaz says. "He asked me, 'Why are you doing this?'"  Diaz replied: "If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money. I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me ... hey, you're more than welcome.  "You know, I just felt maybe he really needs help," Diaz says.  Diaz says he and the teen went into the diner and sat in a booth.  "The manager comes by, the dishwashers come by, the waiters come by to say hi," Diaz says. "The kid was like, 'You know everybody here. Do you own this place?'"  "No, I just eat here a lot," Diaz says he told the teen. "He says, 'But you're even nice to the dishwasher.'"  Diaz replied, "Well, haven't you been taught you should be nice to everybody?"  "Yea, but I didn't think people actually behaved that way," the teen said.  Diaz asked him what he wanted out of life. "He just had almost a sad face," Diaz says.  The teen couldn't answer Diaz — or he didn't want to.  When the bill arrived, Diaz told the teen, "Look, I guess you're going to have to pay for this bill 'cause you have my money and I can't pay for this. So if you give me my wallet back, I'll gladly treat you."  The teen "didn't even think about it" and returned the wallet, Diaz says. "I gave him $20 ... I figure maybe it'll help him. I don't know."  Diaz says he asked for something in return — the teen's knife — "and he gave it to me."  Afterward, when Diaz told his mother what happened, she said, "You're the type of kid that if someone asked you for the time, you gave them your watch."  "I figure, you know, if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right. It's as simple as it gets in this complicated world."

    I'm catching up...

Exhausted_2 This picture cracked me up.  With all that is going on that is how I've been feeling at the end of the day lately.  But with a phenomenal (and hectic) Easter behind me, it feels like this week I'm catching up.  It's almost like I get a little shot of adrenalin when I see the number of tasks getting checked off and the number of e-mails shrinking.  Yep, I'm catching up and feeling good.

    Non-denominational Churches Are Growing

Front_2 A new and extensive survey of the religious landscape in the United States came out on Monday by the Pew-Form on Religion and Public Life.  If you want to all the details, you can get those straight from Pew-Forum.  If you want the just the overview, you can get it from CNN.  Some of the highlights:

    • Non-denominational churches are gaining members.
    • U.S. about to lose its status as a majority Protestant nation.
    • 25 percent of adults leave faith of their upbringing.
    • Survey found a dropping confidence in organized religion.

    I Need Favorite Coffee Recommendations...

Extinct_misto_with_almond_2 The drink that you are looking at may be my very last "misto with almond, decaf, 2% foam".  RIP.  It looks like my favorite drink is going to be extinct!

The first time I went to Starbucks was with Rob Daniels at least twelve years ago.  When I walked in I asked him, "what do you like?"  When he told me that he liked a "misto with almond" I ordered the same thing.  And for the last decade or more that has been my usual.  I will vary off that and get a frappuccino in the summer or some tea in the winter, but that is my usual.  But that is all coming to an end.  I have been informed at several Starbucks that they are discontinuing almond syrup.

Fortunately, at the Ground Level Cafe I will still be able to get my "cafe au lait with almond"; which is truly better than Starbucks!!  But when I'm not at the Yellow Box I'm in big trouble.  So, I'm looking for a new favorite drink at Starbucks.  What are your recommendations?

Think it's been cold in Chicago lately...

Ice_man_2 Someone told me the other day, "oh yeah, the thaw begins in Chicago in late February...". I think that might be wishful thinking.  So for all of you who are trying to find a reason to go south and think it's been really cold in Chicago lately, read about this guy and you will feel toasty warm!

    The Less I Post...

Blank_pageOK, I don't get it.  It seems that fewer posts on this blog results in more subscribers to this blog.  I have only posted one time in the last five days and I have seen a significant jump in subscribers.  Does that mean the less I say, the greater influence I have?  Weird!

And just because I didn't find time to write about this week doesn't mean that nothing happened this week.  It has been an amazing week!

MONDAY: I flew out to Washington, D.C. and met with Todd Wilson and Jay Steenhuysen to talk about catalyzing a movement of reproducing churches.  There are currently three obstacles:

    1. Leaders - creating a pipeline of young emerging leaders.
    2. Training - equipping these leaders with how to lead a reproducing church and/or a network.
    3. Funding - the finances to make it all happen.

If we can implement the stuff we talked about; then we could see that movement we all dream about!

TUESDAY:  Had some great meetings to put the finishing touches on the Generosity Conference that we are planning here at Community on February 2nd.  It is going to be an event that will mark the history of CCC.  In the afternoon I had a National Board meeting for the Institute For Community where we reviewed a plan to put a community facilitator (think church planter!) in 500 apartment communities across the United States in the next five years.  I love it!

WEDNESDAY:  A day full of meetings at Community where I met with all-staff, Campus Pastors and Lead Team.  In the afternoon I got to connect with Dave Dummit, the Apostolic Leader for one of our NewThing networks - he's doing a great job!  And then I got to connect with Dave Richa, who is in my  NewThing network and the guy who got NewThing started when he moved to Denver to start a church.

THURSDAY:  Great meeting with Ed Bahler and Joe Myers about the Cornerstone Knowledge Network.  After we talked about CKN we took a ride out to East Aurora with Kirsten Strand and I think we may have experienced one big God-thing!  I saw an old beat-up 50,000 sq. ft. building, but those guys saw a space that could bring transformation to a whole community. Stay tuned.  In the afternoon, Eli Orozco and I got to visit the Chicago Dream Center and see the amazing stuff that Wilfredo DeJesus and New Life Covenant Church are doing in the Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago.  Great stuff. Kingdom Stuff.  On the way home I got to catch up with  Alan Hirsch on the phone and talk about his main session at the Exponential Conference.  I love that guy and I love how he is graciously challenging the body of Christ.  He believes that the U.S. is at a pivotal time and it could either experience great revival or go the way of Europe.   I agree.  I believe God is going to use church planting and reproducing churches to save the day! That night Tim Sutherland and I took the boys to my first Chicago Blackhawks game. The first Blackhawks game for a Chicago grown boy!  Thanks for the tickets and the suite, Chuck!

FRIDAY:  Tried to take the day off since I worked on Monday.  Squeezed in an interview with Outreach Magazine for a future cover story on the state of Evangelism in America.  Pretty big topic and I'm not sure I'm qualified, but it was fun talking to Lindy about the church and what we see happening.  Finished  answering some questions for a chapter in a book that Geoff Surratt is writing.   It  will be a winner...watch for it!

And that brings us to today.  See, I wasn't loafing.  I just didn't get a chance to post about it.  But thanks for subscribing anyway!!
